2011 10U Cougars - It's over
After 6 weeks of travel ball, it finally ended.
The State tournament was held at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA (right on the GA / Tennessee border). It was a great experience and the boys played a lot of baseball. Unfortunately, it ended a few games short of a championship.
Of the 24 teams, our Sandy Plains Cougars finished 5th in the State. It was a fun experience and hopefully Cole will look back on this as a really enjoyable time.
After working his tail off, he earned the leadoff spot in the lineup and the starting Second base job.
He really grew as a player both offensively and defensively.
His final stats:

Priceless!
Summer vacation 2011 - New York
This year we decided to take the kids to a nice relaxing vacation in the mountains of upstate New York. Well, not so fast. Due to some late changes of plans, we spent 1 day upstate, a day in Jersey and a few in good old NYC.
It was an action packed week and the kids have some experiences that will last a lifetime.
On our first day we drove to one of Laura's elementary school friends from Pittsburgh. It was a nice break after the early morning travel. Our kids got to take a break and play with some new friends for a few hours while Laura and her friend got to visit and catch up on some lost time.
Then we were off on a 3 hour drive up to Cooperstown. Granted, our rental, a Hyundai Sonata was a bit on the small side but you would think that the kids have never driven in sedan before. We all got our fair share of "He's touching me! or "She's touching me!"
There was still plenty of daylight when we arrived so decided to grab a quick dinner before heading into Cooperstown to scout out the town for our next days adventures.
As you drive into town, you pass Cooperstown Dream Park. This is the pinnacle for Youth Baseball and after seeing it up close, we hope to play there in the coming years.
Cooperstown itself is a quaint little town and the kids loved all the stores lined with item after item of Yankees gear.
Tuesday was Hall of Fame day. We got up early and headed into town to explore the Hall. Before going in, we needed to fuel up on Jordan's power breakfast.
As for the Hall itself, it was awesome! The kids had a great time seeing the memorabilia. There was a scavenger hunt to keep them busy in each section of the museum so not only did they see some cool things, they learned a few things about the history of the game. It was a really nice day. Here are just a few of the many pictures taken.
One of their favorite moments came when they were selected to perform the radio call of Hank Aaron's
Cole was the color commentator, Jordan read the station identification and Noah was the "sound effects technician" You can check out their performance here.

The day would not have been complete without picking up some souvenirs, the coolest being Cole's personally engraved bat from the Where is All Began Bat Company.
That night we headed back down to Jersey to visit Mimi. The kids got to spend some really nice time both at Dinner on Tuesday and bringing bagels over Wednesday morning.
After breakfast, we headed into NYC and became tourists. Noah really wanted to go to the top of the Empire State building so that was 1st on the agenda. It was a beautiful day and we saw for miles. Jordan was a little shutterbug taking picture after picture. Here are just a few of the shots.
A visit to NYC wouldn't be complete without stopping for some Hot Dogs. We worked up quite an appetite at the Empire State Building so we quickly hit the Papaya Dog store across the street.
After lunch, the kids wanted to hit Times Square for the giant Toys R Us and M&M world. As we were making our way uptown, we saw a line forming a block before the stores. It turned New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who was promoting an upcoming TV show.
The kids really thought that was cool as they got to meet him and get an autographed mini football.
After hitting a few of the stores, we were hungry again so we did what everyone should do when in the City. Catch a train downtown for dinner. Since we had already eaten Chines, Little Italy beat out Chinatown as the dinner of choice. We ate at a simple Italian restaurant right on Mulberry Street. The food was OK but the kids thought the experience was great. Jordan loved hearing everyone speaking Italian in Little Italy, Chinese in Chinatown and Spanish in the Bronx.
We finished off with some gelato and coffee from Ferrara's. It was a great ending to a very LONG day.
Tomorrow - Yankee Stadium!
